Selecting a memorial is not a matter to be rushed because of the large range of materials and designs that are available; we certainly recommend discussing this with one of our memorial consultants so that you can consider the varying merits of the different options open to you. It is also very important to understand any restrictions that govern what you may select for the memorial. Quite often, particularly in churchyards, only specific materials and designs are permitted and occasionally there are guidelines towards the suitability of inscriptions. Prior to erecting a memorial, the burial authority (church or cemetery) has to approve the design of the memorial and inscription so it is important to have the correct information from the beginning to avoid disappointment.

Choosing the right memorial

We always recommend looking around the burial ground to see memorials selected by other people. You will also see how memorials weather over time and if they have been affected by surrounding trees.

In addition to supplying and engraving memorials, we can provide maintenance of existing memorials that perhaps need a bit of professional attention. We can also provide insurance to cover the cost of your memorial should it ever be damaged; it doesn’t happen very often but when it does, the cost of repair or replacement only compounds the pain of seeing the damage.

The following pages show examples of different types of material and design but there are an infinite number of variations we could show you. Memorials are nearly always designed and made to order so you can pretty much take an idea from one illustration and combine it with another, or something from your own thoughts.

Memorial Costs

The cost of memorials varies greatly; in particular the options to use imported granite can mean the price changes on a regular basis. The cost of the headstone itself is only one part of the overall cost with the engraved inscription and the fixing of the memorial (which varies according to ground conditions and local burial authority rules) adding to this. We will provide you with an estimation of cost as we move through the selection process so that you can amend should you wish and move towards a formal itemised quotation once all is decided in principle and before you make a commitment.
